Vodafone to use Refer’s fibre optic cable network in Portugal, Oct. 2002

Vodafone Portugal signed an agreement allowing it to use over 1500 kilometres of Refer Telecom’s fibre optic cable network for a period of 12 years, with an option to use any future network expansions. Under the terms of the agreement, Vodafone will be able to use the fibre optic cable network leased by Refer Telecom for all the types of services for which it is, or may later be, authorised or licensed. According to the operator, the agreement will allow Vodafone to make significant cost savings in its forecast total network costs over the agreement term.

Optimus and Vodafone Telcel ignore regulator's interconnection order 15th Oct. 2002
Portugal's 3G start-up, OniWay has asked the country’s telecoms regulator, Anacom, to force rivals Optimus and Vodafone Telecel to carry its calls, claiming that the two have refused to provide interconnection.

Last month, Anacom ordered Optimus and Vodafone Telecel to provide connection links with OniWay, a subsidiary of Electricidade de Portugal. However, Optimus and Vodafone have questioned the legality of the deal between TMN and OniWay, which allows the operator to provide mobile services using TMN's network and are contesting the regulator’s interconnection order in court.

OniWay said it would only launch its mobile operations in Portugal when it had secured connection deals with Vodafone and Optimus.
